In most cases even with a 50% difference you are talking about the enemy 2 shot killing your units. Which means in most ages they rush forward and MAYBE they take out a couple of units (sometimes you can do better of course depending on the era and which units you are talking about) but mostly it just means all of your units are available to be shot by the enemy. Keep in mind if you auto (whether from inside the battle map or from your army screen) your units move first. Practice makes perfect as they say and learning how to fight will tell you when auto battling is a good idea. In addition since the computer fights pretty stupidly you don't want to use auto battle until you actually understand the battle system. So if you're not careful you'll just send the AA to its death on first move, automatically losing the fight. You indicate that you had a 50% advantage in boost but was that attack boost or attack AND defense boost? The reality is that while attack boost is very useful the toughness of your units plays a large impact on whether or not you are going to win a battle using auto battle. The AA is a great unit due to the contact ability (always retaliate), but it's dangerous to use for autobattles as it moves before some units (can't quite remember which, but pretty sure it moves before tanks at least). Please provide some additional information.
